Dentasys vs Dentalpin: your own server or a cloud someone else manages

Dentalpin and Dentasys are two new dental programs that solve the same problem in opposite ways: Dentalpin gives you the code to install on your own server; Dentasys gives you the finished service, in the cloud, for a fixed fee. Dentalpin published its comparison with us; this is ours.

In short

Dentalpin is dental software with published source code (BSL 1.1 licence, which becomes Apache 2.0 after four years), backed by Dentaltix, that the practice installs on its own server: the program costs nothing and the server comes to around €16-19 a month according to its website. The practice or its integrator takes care of installation, backups, updates and the data processing agreement. Dentasys is a managed cloud service: €80/month + VAT for the whole practice, with unlimited users and no extra modules, data in the European Union (AWS, Paris region), an art. 28 GDPR data processing agreement signed on sign-up, 99.5% contractual availability and phone support. Dentalpin is a fit if you have someone to maintain a server and want control over the code; Dentasys, if you would rather not deal with the technical side.

Self-hosted or managed cloud: what you have to do yourself

With Dentalpin, the program is free and the server is cheap, but someone has to install it, run the backups, apply the updates, keep an eye on security and sign the data processing agreement. If you have a trusted IT person or an integrator, it is a very reasonable model and gives you full control.

With Dentasys you pay a fee and we take care of all of that: servers in the European Union, daily encrypted backups kept for at least 30 days, updates and support that answers the phone.

What Dentalpin asked us, with facts

In its comparison of 28 September 2026, Dentalpin raised four questions about Dentasys: where the data is, what the contract says, how you leave and whether the code can be audited. They are fair questions and these are the answers, published on our Security and Terms pages:

  • Data: in the European Union, on AWS, Paris region (France), with a separate database for each practice.
  • Contract: on sign-up, the art. 28 GDPR data processing agreement is signed, with the list of providers and their guarantees.
  • Availability: 99.5% monthly by contract, with a credit of 5% of the fee for each percentage point below that.
  • Exit: you export your data whenever you like and, after cancelling, you have 30 days to download everything.
  • Code: it is closed, like most dental software. If auditing the code is a requirement for you, Dentalpin offers that.

What has changed since their comparison

Some of the information about Dentasys in their article is no longer current: the interface is now also available in German, WhatsApp messages are charged at Meta's rates (€0.0166 per reminder or notice and €0.0585 per marketing message, plus VAT) and the voice receptionist line costs €9 a month plus €0.30 per minute answered (+ VAT).

Where Dentalpin is strong (our words)

  • · Software with no subscription fee and published source code you can audit.
  • · Data on the server of your choice, with a full REST API and webhooks.
  • · Backed by Dentaltix and under very active development.

Our verdict

If you have someone to maintain a server, want to read and audit the code or need a full API, Dentalpin is an honest and inexpensive option. If you would rather someone else took care of servers, backups and updates, you work in Catalan, you use a radiology program or you want AI to answer the phone, Dentasys is the better fit.
